Supporting Excellent Science Teaching for Georgia

District 9 Director: Donita Legoas

Hello, my name is Donita Legoas. I am a 6th grade Earth Science/STEM teacher at A.R. Johnson Health Science and Engineering Magnet School in Augusta, Georgia.  I have been teaching for around 25 years in a variety of grade levels.  This year my goals are to increase membership in our area and to offer professional development opportunities to members in my district and to be an advocate for any needs of the educators and administrators in our area.

I have a 26 year-old son named Miguel who is a graduate of Georgia Southern University and is now a reporter for the Augusta Chronicle Newspaper.  He has been married to a wonderful lady named Caitlin for 2 years. I also have a nephew/Godson named Nicholas who is finishing his computer engineering degree this year at Georgia Southern.  They are often my faithful science assistants. I am also known as "One of the Science Sisters" because my twin sister, Kristina Istre (the GSTA Vice President), is also a science teacher at my school. We enjoy presenting workshops on science education topics throughout the year.

I am excited to serve as the District 9 Representative, and I hope to raise our current membership in GSTA. I am confident that with hard work, science education in the state of Georgia will continue to be a focus and will help students to realize its importance in their future success.  If you ever have a question, please feel free to email.
