This is our fourth virtual PL session on the connections between science and literacy learning. This interactive session will bring educators together to explore strategies that will translate directly back to the classroom. What started out as an elementary Saturday GSTA session became an organic PLC including middle school and high school teachers too. Join this group as they share ways to incorporate fiction and nonfiction books in science lessons that support all students at all levels. Come explore books that fit nicely into science lessons and engage students in enjoying literature as well as increasing science literacy and motivation. See what research says about reading different text structures. The panel will use their experiences with read aloud selections and student books in the time together. Through integration and focus on purpose, using these phenomenal ideas can engage students in opportunities to make sense of science concepts while encouraging literacy in different subject areas.

Takeaways:

  • Teachers will see how we weave science fiction/nonfiction text into science lessons.
  • Teachers will leave with plans integrating literature and science in phenomena, SEP, NGSS, CCC alignment.
  • Teachers will be provided research-based strategies for increasing the use of literacy within their curriculum.

Speakers:

  • Amanda Buice, Executive Director, Georgia Youth Science and Technology Centers
  • Marlee Tierce, PAEMST and Dallas Stewart Award Winner
  • Stephanie Westhafer, Jackson County, GaDOE K-5 Science-Literacy Lesson Developer
  • Tiffany Jones, Cobb County, 2020-21 GSTA High School Teacher of the Year
