  • This trip will take participants to locations in and around FDR State Park that illustrate the geology of the Pine Mountain region, including the oldest rocks in the state (ca. 1.1 billion years) and those of a 500-million-year-old coastline that faced an ocean older than the Atlantic Ocean. We'll discuss the relationship between these regional rocks and formation of the ancient Appalachians during growth of the supercontinent Pangea. Additionally, we'll visit a proposed impact crater east of Roosevelt's Little White House and discuss how different scientists looking at the same rocks sometimes come to different conclusions regarding their history and significance. Transportation will be provided from the conference center.
  • This trip will take participants to locations in and around the city of Columbus that illustrate the geology of the "Fall Line", a geologic feature that
significantly influenced the history of the city, the state, and the entire U.S. Eastern Seaboard. We'll explore rocks that formed in an ancient Himalayan-sized mountain belt on the north side of the Fall Line, as well as those to the south of the Fall Line that formed in a shallow ocean once covering South Georgia.
Additionally, we'll discuss the most recent geological research from this region - the discovery of 100 to 150 million year old paleo valleys that may be ancestors of the modern Chattahoochee River. Transportation will be provided from the conference center.
  • The National Infantry Museum and Soldier Center opened in 2009 with one guiding mission: to honor the legacy and valor of the U.S. Army Infantryman. Come and experience a brief guided tour of the museum and the outdoor exhibits. Enjoy our documentary film and Down Ranger Experience. You may go anytime Friday - allow for 4-5 hours.
